Acid waved in my stomach, reaching for the peak of my throat.
Stop it. You can do this. Just go at it like you own the place. Stride up to the coach like Mom does when she’s on the donation hunt.
The fields sat at the southern end of Jackson Memorial Park: one for softball, one for baseball. I had parked on the baseball side by a beat-up orange truck. The boys were already there, tossing balls and joking loud enough that I heard them through the closed windows of my car. Thankfully, the softball field was empty. Taking a deep breath, I climbed out of the car, pulling my equipment from the backseat.
Maybe it was my BMW, or maybe it was me, but the only sound I heard as I stalked toward the field were birds chirping to one another. No doubt the guys recognized a girl when they saw one. Mother Nature blessed me a bit too much in the boob department for anybody to mistake me as a boy.
I strode onto the soft dirt of the field and straight toward the older man with the clipboard. Coach Bernie Strauss stared back at me. He was easily six-eight with tree trunk legs and arms that UFC fighters would die for. He looked more like a Marine Corps drill instructor than a summer league baseball coach. I totally wanted to test him by shouting “Semper Fi.”
I stopped in front of him, waiting for what I knew was coming.
“Softball practice ended about twenty minutes ago.” He sounded like he ate gravel for breakfast.
“I’m not here to play softball, Coach.” I straightened my back and channeled my mother’s unbending confidence. “I’m here to help you win the city championship this year.”
No one laughed like I expected. So I exhaled, relaxed. Big mistake.
“Get off my field. I ain’t got time for this,” he shouted loud enough that birds scattered from a nearby tree. Coach Strauss turned his back to me and continued to bark at the team. “If you don’t get back to practice, you’ll be running laps in three … two …” His slight Texan accent made the “you’s” sound like “ya’s”.
The boys started throwing and stretching again, but they didn’t stop watching us.
“Coach –” I began.
“I ain’t your coach.”
I lost my cool, just like my father. “This is bullcrap. Look at your registration sheet.” He didn’t, so I snatched the clipboard from him and pointed. “See the name Vic Hudson? Well, that’s me. I paid to play. And I fully intend to. It isn’t against the rules.”
Coach ripped the clipboard from my fingers and flipped to another page. I waited. He read. I tapped my foot. That’s not nearly as dramatic on a dirt infield. The boys stopped warming up again.
He looked me up and down. “Fine. I’ll give you a shot, Hudson. You suck and you’re gone.”
“I can deal with that.”
“Get out there.” He pointed at a tall, super skinny boy. “Delvin, warm her up.”
I tossed my bag into the dugout and jogged onto the field. It didn’t take me long to figure out why Coach Strauss told Delvin to warm up with me. He kicked his leg like a pitcher and tossed a pretty nasty fastball. If I had to guess, he could hit ninety from the mound on a good day. It would’ve been stupid if I said anything, even though every ball he threw at me stung my fingers like tiny pricks of a hundred safety pins. I didn’t even try to throw my hardest. I warmed up like it was any other day.
Then he began stepping back. One step here, then another.
Idiot.
I threw hard and high to make my point. Delvin had to reach to get it. He may throw harder, but I can throw farther.
“Alrigh’, get in here,” Coach yelled. He raised his eyes at Delvin, who shrugged. “I know most of you from last year. We only got two potential newbies. One’s a girl. Anyone got a problem with that?”
If they did, they sure as hell weren’t going to tell Coach Strauss.
“Good. I expect you to treat her like you’d treat anybody else.” He looked at me and softened his tone. “What position do you play, honey?”
“Third.” I glared at him. He smirked then turned back to the team. Before he could open his mouth, I said, “And I’m not your honey.”
His head snapped back like he’d taken a right hook to the cheek. “Excuse me?”
I pointed at Delvin. “Do you call him ‘honey’?”
Delvin’s cheeks glowed light pink with either rage or embarrassment. I didn’t know which and really didn’t care.
Coach didn’t answer me though. His chin grew beet red, which crept up his cheeks all the way to his pale yellow crew cut. Steam came out of every clogged pore on his face as he yelled, “Everybody at third. Jayden, get your ass to first.” He sneered at me and I expected to get kicked off the field. “We’re going to field some grounders and see who handles them best. I’ll hit you three then rotate. Hudson, ladies first.”
Crap. Me and my big mouth. He’s going to either hit me a line drive at a hundred miles an hour or make me go so far out of range that I make an ass of myself.
I jogged to third and dug my cleats into the stubborn dirt. The rest of the guys lined up along the fence, amused grins matching Strauss’s own jack-o-lantern expression. Coach tossed the ball into the air.
Crack.
I jumped spread eagle and dropped my glove between my legs, catching the line drive. I came down ready to throw to first, but Jayden wasn’t on the bag. He stood three steps off with his mouth open. Smiling, I rolled the ball back to home plate.
Coach didn’t give me time to get back into position when he hit a grounder to my left. In a game, the shortstop would’ve played it, but this was a different type of game. I dove and knocked it down. My throw to first was in the dirt, but I was on my butt when I whipped it across the infield. That shouldn’t be held against me. It was an almost impossible play.
The last ball went up the line. I hustled and would’ve had it clean until it hit the bag. It took a nasty bounce that was nearly out of reach. I jumped and brought it down barehanded, throwing to first off balance as I fell into foul territory.
I stood up without looking to see if Jayden caught it and walked to the fence to wait for my next turn. The guys gawked at me as I leaned against the fence, ignoring them. I’d made my point. I could field. My next time up, Coach hit some routine grounders.
After rotating through every infield position, it was time for batting practice.
“You’re up,” Coach announced as he pointed his chunky finger my way. “Delvin, pitch to her.”
While Delvin threw some warm up tosses, I pulled my large batting gloves on, stretching them over my long fingers. The shin guard came loose as I walked to the plate, but I didn’t dare adjust it. Not yet anyway. I’m a switch hitter in softball but more natural from the right side. So that’s where I started when I stepped into the box. I wasn’t entirely certain I could hit a fastball from the left anyway.
Delvin dug at the rubber. I did the same at the plate. Kicked some rocks out from under my right foot. Buried my left foot in the front of the box. Right arm cocked at a ninety degree angle, my bat perched above my shoulder, I waited. A trickle of sweat ran down my cheek. This felt more like a playoff game than a practice.
My swing was graceful as I rocked the fastball over Jayden. He stretched, revealing his dark walnut skin. His long braids smacked his back as he dropped to the ground. Jayden could jump for a big guy.
“Nice,” Coach said.
The Asian boy behind the plate whistled low and said, “Sweet.”
Delvin tossed a few more pitches before Coach snapped at me to get to third. I didn’t hesitate, grabbing my glove and hustling onto the field.
“Get in the dugout,” Coach commanded after everyone had hit.
I stood at the end of the bench, waiting for the axe to drop. I’d played well enough to warrant sticking around, but I was still lacking the mandatory testosterone. If Coach told me to go, I would. It was his team and I wasn’t about to make things worse by throwing an epic hissy.
“We got a tough schedule this year. Last year, the Rebels kicked our ass to take the district. Well, half those boys can’t play no more. Hell, we’re missing three of our own. It’s time we take our game to the next level. The Rebels need to rebuild more than we do. We can take ‘em. Now get outta here. I’ll see you tomorrow.” He glanced my way. “All of you.”
I grabbed my gear and practically bounced out of the dugout when Coach called me and Shane Anders back.
Shane was short, plump, and had a face pot-marked by zits and craters. Something told me that his dad made him play to get him out of the basement. Coach Strauss towered over him. Shane tremored a little.
“Alright. Vic, what’s your real name?”
“Vic.”
He sighed, sending a poof of peppermint my way that didn’t conceal his bad breath. It smelled like he didn’t bother to brush his teeth in the morning. Ever. “Don’t bullshit me, girl.”
“I’m not, Coach. Vic’s short for Victoria.”
He stared at me and shook his head. “Fine. Here’s the drill. We practice every day at the same time, at the same place until the first game. Ain’t hard to remember. No excuses for tardiness or missin’ a game. Miss a practice, you don’t play the next game. Bring your own equipment. Forget your glove or your cleats, you don’t play.
“Games start next week. Your jersey will be clean. If it ain’t, you ain’t playin’. We play on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays for six weeks. Team that wins their district plays in the city championship tourney. I don’t know nothin’ about either one of you, but there are a couple of boys here that could move on to college ball. Scouts look at summer programs, too, especially if they’re already interested in a player. Neither one of you is goin’ to play baseball at the next level. I just ask that you don’t screw it up for everyone else.
“Now get out of here. Today’s practice was a short one. Tomorrow’s not gonna be this easy.”
Shane took off in a hurry. It was obvious he was scared of Coach. We watched him run to a small pickup truck and scamper in.
“Can I ask you something, Vic?” Coach crossed his arms and glared at me.
“Yeah, sure.”
“Why’re you here?” He nodded toward the empty softball field. “You could be playin’ ball over there. Tell me the truth.”
I knew the question was coming, but I didn’t expect any sincerity behind it. “Softball isn’t baseball, Coach. It may seem similar, but it isn’t the same. I wanted to play ball one more time. That’s all.”
He nodded, then turned away from me and started gathering his bats.
“Am I really on the team?” I asked. I needed absolute confirmation.
“Yeah, got no choice.” He straightened up and smiled at me. “Looked at the regs. Doesn’t say this team is for boys sixteen to seventeen. Just says players. But you already knew that, didn’t you?”
I smiled. Of course I did. “See you tomorrow, Coach Strauss.”
He grunted and I took off to my car, trying not to skip like a ten-year-old.
I’m in. I’m going to play ball again.

2018 PitchWars wishlist for Heather Van Fleet and Lana Sloan

2018-A-CoMentors-BANNER.jpg

I am so excited to be co-mentoring with my 2017 PitchWars mentee, Lana Sloan this year. Together, we'll be taking the romance mentor/mentee world by storm as #TeamAwesome 2.0.

Lana and I will be accepting all things romantic NEW ADULT and ADULT...with a few exceptions of course. With that being said, PLEASE be sure to read through our wish list carefully so as not to sub something to us we won't be accepting. (We'd hate for you to waste one of your mentor picks on someone who does not even accept your genre!!)

Now, here's a little something to help you get to know us, personally.

NMPD-TEAM-AWESOME-1.jpg

Heather Van Fleet_Lana Sloan.png

About Heather

Hi! I'm Heather, a stay-at-home mom of three crazy girls and two pups, one big, one tiny, both of which have officially turned me into a stereotypical dog lady. I’m married to my high school sweetheart, Chris, and this year we'll be celebrating 16 years of marriage. The seven of us live in northwestern Illinois, less than a mile from the Mississippi river.

I’m represented by Stacey Donaghy of Donaghy Literary, and my adult contemporary romance series, Reckless Hearts (A Three Men and a Baby retelling, Alpha Marines style) is published through Sourcebooks Casablanca. Book one (Reckless Hearts) and book two, (The Right Kind of Reckless) are both available in stores now. Book three, (Recklessly Ever After) releases at the end of October.)

First and foremost, I am a HUGE romance reader. Like, I will ONLY read a story if it has a central romance. I've been that way since the age of twelve when I would sneak into the romance section of the library and finger through the old, metal shelving units for all things Harlequin books. Now, I'm lucky enough to stay at home and write those types of romance books as a career.

Industry wise, I worked as a content/developmental editor for nearly two year at a small press and fell head over heels with my job. Now, I do the occasional content freelance gig for a select number of romance authors.

For the past five years, I've interned with various literary agents, and have come to the conclusion that becoming an agent someday, is my end goal in this industry. There is something amazing about helping an author achieve their goals, and I think that's one of my biggest draws to being a mentor through PitchWars.

Currently, I'm an editorial intern at P.S. Literary where I work under the fan-tabulous Maria Vicente. Working at PS is seriously the best job I've ever had thus far. A dream, bottom line.

About Lana

Howdy, I’m Lana and it’s an absolute pleasure to meet you.

I’m a SoCal mother of two small kiddos and the owner of way too many pets, including two dogs, four cats, and a parrot. Over the years, I’ve also had a revolving door of hard luck cases ranging from alligator lizards, to opossums, to pigeons.

Before I started college, I met my future husband at a goth club in Hollywood, CA. It’s been nineteen years this month—yikes!—and though my outlook on life, musical tastes, and clothing choices have brightened significantly, beneath the surface I’m still an angsty girl who can’t believe she was lucky enough to get her happily ever after.

I have two short stories out in the world: ‘Come Find Me’ a contemporary erotic romance in Ticket to Ride about a chance encounter on the parking deck of a Seattle ferry, and ‘Perinacht’ an erotic historical fantasy romance about a man seeking vengeance against the pirate who killed his beloved in Pirates: A Boys Behaving Badly Anthology. I’m represented by Jordy Albert of the Booker Albert Agency, and I’m currently on submission with my steamy contemporary romance Just a Taste of You, which was featured in PitchWars 2017.

I LOVE ROMANCE. Whatever I write, and whatever I consume as a reader, I’m always looking for a romantic angle. If you threw a geometry book in front of me, it wouldn’t take long for me to deduce that the parallelogram has been making eyes at the isosceles triangle from the very first page. Bottom line, I live for love stories, whether real or imagined.

For the past three years, I’ve helped other writers through critique and beta reading in romance and other genres. I have a strong attention to detail, and feedback on the sexy stuff is a personal specialty.

As a past mentee, I’ve also been on the other side of Pitch Wars. I know how hard you’re going to work, all the emotions that are going to rock you, and that in the end it WILL be worth it. I’m ready to kick your butt in a very empathetic way and shower you with champagne gifs when you have a breakthrough.

What to expect if we pick you as our mentee:

As your mentors, we will work with you on the big picture as far as your manuscript goes. This includes fixing plot holes, beefing up character development, cutting the dreaded telling versus showing, pacing, and all the stuff that goes along with content/developmental edits.

Throughout this process, we will be your best friends, standing by you long after the contest is over. BUT at the same time, we will also be the two people who push you the hardest.

If we think your book needs an overhaul, we’re going to need a mentee who is not afraid to tackle that. You only get a few months to make this baby shine, so you must be willing to work hard and fast. If you're not willing to possibly kill your darlings, change your love interest, remove a point of view, or change an entire book from first person to third, or vice versa, then you might not want us as your mentors. We’re not saying this is something that HAS to happen, but we will suggest it be done if we feel it needs it. In the end, though, this is YOUR baby. We're only here to make it pretty and guide you along the way with our knowledge.

We will give you a lovely, gushing editorial note with all our big thoughts and plans, then we will each go through your book (twice) doing both content/developmental edits along with line edits.

This will be hard. Grueling, even. Like we mentioned before, we’ll push you to your breaking point. You may think it's not possible, but it is. If you have the drive and time to make it happen, then we will do whatever we can to help you along the way. More than anything, we want you to walk away from this contest with a top-notch manuscript that’s ready to land you that dream agent.

Now, on to the good stuff.

Here is what we want to see in both ADULT and NEW ADULT submissions for PitchWars, 2018:

Contemporary Romance

Tropes we love to devour:

1.       Best friend’s older brother

2.       Brother’s best friend

3.       Friends to lovers

4.       Next door neighbors

5.       Enemies to lovers

6.       Childhood friends to adult lovers

7.       Single dads or moms

8.       Secret Babies

9.       Roommates to lovers

10.     Reunion stories

11.      Forced Proximity

- First and foremost, please, oh PLEASE give us your diverse and ownvoices romance novel this year. We're open to anything M/M or F/F especially.

- Got a heroine who is plus-sized, a total badass, or even unlikeable? Send them our way. As Heather's website says, every girl deserves an extraordinary romance.

- Make us laugh! Give us your over-the-top rom coms. The adorable meet-cutes too. We'd love to find the next The Hating Game by Sally Thorne or anything that gives us a Penny Reid vibe.

- Give us your stories with camping and/or the outdoors. A romance like the movie Indian Summer would be fantastic!

- Nature in general as a huge obstacle for a couple would be fabulous too. Inclement weather books where the h/h must survive through a hurricane or tornado, while trying to navigate love, are always delightful. Like, a Twister remaking...with way more romance, plus some sex, please. Something ALA Frigid by J. Lynn or The Gamble by Kristen Ashley.

- A road trip gone wrong story? Yes, please. Something that holds a The Edge of Never by J.A. Redmerski vibe.

- How about survival stories? Do you have those? Something like, On the Island by Tracey Garvis-Graves.  A couple stranded somewhere with only each other to lean on... Even better if the trope is enemies to lovers.

- Got a superhero story with a strong, central romance plot? Appeal to our geeky, comic book side and we will forever adore you. SEND, SEND, SEND! BONUS POINTS FOR A SUPERHEROINE! #GIRLPOWER

- Give us your sports romances. Especially if it's not a stereotypical jock story. Hockey players, wrestlers, baseball players, soccer stars, rugby players, MMA fighters, golfers, etc. (BONUS POINTS IF THE HEROINE IS THE SPORTY ONE!)

- Stories featuring a band of brothers or band of sisters, (literally or figuratively) with series potential, are solid gold! (This kind of ties into our sports romance request too.) Basically, if there is a unique connection between your characters, we'd love to see this. (ALA military characters, frat brothers, sorority sisters, groups of people who have been through tragedy together and stay close long after, like Roni Loren's The Ones Who Got Away series.

- GIVE US ALL THE BANTER! Character banter that makes us laugh, or gives us the chills during sexy times, would be pure heaven.

- Dirty talking heroes in the bedroom... Yes. Please.

- Reformed bad boys with HUGE hearts of gold would both be FANTASTIC!

- Give us your grumpy heroes. The ones who hate the world, only to have a leading lady come into their lives and change their views and make them smile. (NOTE: The heroine/hero must win over the grump with their sparking personalities, not their sparkling lady or man bits.)

- Got an adorkable hero? A ginger? We will absolutely take them both, please-and-thank-you.

- How about a story that takes place in a theatre, or even on Broadway? Dancing, singing, and sexy times on and off the stage! Give us your Lin-Manuel Miranda, Anthony Ramos', or George Salazar characters!

- Quirky characters/characters with interesting idiosyncrasies and proclivities – we’d love something neither of us have seen. Characters who don’t approach life in the same way as the masses. PRETTY PLEASE!!

- We adore our rock stars, country boys, and mountain men with the flannel shirts and the bushy beards!  We also LOVE tattooed guys. The ones with piercings? YES. Oh, yes. *Grabby hands*

- Good guys. Sweethearts. SWEET JESUS, we need more of those in our world. Give us your shy gentlemen. The mama's boys who let loose thanks to their leading ladies, or leading gentlemen.

- We LOVE romantic thrillers and romantic suspense! Anything that's gripping and will hold us until the end. Nothing is hotter than two people fighting for their lives, and somehow finding time to have sex in the midst of it all.

- Have a Jax-like character from Sons of Anarchy in your story? Send it! Motorcycle club books in general can be a hard sell in the romance industry right now, especially if they are really dark, so we might be picky on plot line. Bottom line is, if we love it, and think we can help it, then we'll grab on and never let go.

- Give us your erotic and/or BDSM romances. BUT, not a Fifty Shades retelling, please. We need NEW sexy, not something that's already been done before.

- If your book is not necessarily filled with sexy times, but you'd possibly like it to be, then let us help you learn how to open those doors!

- We WILL look at sweet romance. Promise. BUT, more than likely we'll be begging you to turn that baby into something a little more intense. (IF it fits the story and you're comfortable doing that, of course.)

Paranormal Romance & Urban fantasy romance

- We LOVE paranormal romance. (The steamier, the better!)

- Give us your shifters. Your alphas or betas. Wolves, bears, tigers, etc. Think Patricia Brigg's Mercy Thompson series or Molly Harpers Naked Werewolf series. Both are set in a more contemporary world, which is a total plus for us.

- Sadly, we are not huge vampire lovers. UNLESS, of course, you wow us with something that is completely different and out there. Nothing that's been done before, basically.

Fantasy Romance

- First things first... We are NOT the mentors for worldbuilding. Like, at all. BUT if you have a fantasy romance that has a couple who drive the story, we'd be down for that, completely. Please, though, don't send us complicated wording and wild, make believe worlds that need their own dictionary to understand because, honest to goodness, we'd likely get bored.

- No more than two POV's for us in fantasy romance, please.

- Think, Amanda Bouchet for example. Her Kingmaker Chronicles are sexy and lyrical with a fierce heroine! Those are the kinds of fantasies we'd devour.

Sci-Fi with VERY strong romantic elements

- Sexy alien guys are HOT, especially if they look or act like Jennifer Armentrout's Daemon Black from the YA Obsidian series. So, PLEASE... if you have an adult or NA book with the grown version of this hottie, we will FOR SURE gobble it up!

- Anything that has a Laurann Dohner or Eve Lanlais. (Sexy Cyborgs, alien mates? Yes, please!)

- A romance that takes place in space? ON a space ship? Another planet? Sure! We'd be down for that.

Historical Romance

- We're open to this, but it has to be steamy, please.

- We also want any potential mentee who will be submitting these to us to know that we are the mentors who can help you with sexy times, kissing, romance, plot, all that good stuff. But YOU have to have a handle on historical accuracy.

Things we DON'T want to see in our submissions:

- We're not into Regency Romances.

- Stories with slut shaming are huge no's for us. if a woman loves sex, and has lots of it, we absolutely do not want her to be looked down upon by other women, or men, because of this.

-  Women's Fiction and NON HEA's... Both of these are going to be no's this year. If you want to make us sob in a book, then do so in the middl, then give us our happy ending.

- Love triangles are not our jam, so if your story has one, and you send it our way, be forewarned... It's not a deal breaker, but IF we happen to pick your manuscript, and the love triangle is avoidable, then we will likely tell you it has to go.

*FINAL NOTE*

If you send us something that has zero romance in it then we likely won't even read it. So PLEASE do yourself a favor and don't send us something non-romance related because you think it will change our minds. We'd hate for you to miss out on an opportunity to be picked by a mentor that does want to read books with no romance.

In the end, like agents, us mentors look for voice first and for most. Something we can connect to. Something that makes us want to weep with joy and hug and kiss and possibly lick the pages of your manuscript. When it's all said and done, we will pick the manuscript we fall in love with and can feel ourselves helping the most. In fact, it may have nothing to do with the things we mentioned above.

If you want to chat more with us, or have questions about our wish list, (or just want to find out how awesome we are) then follow us on Twitter  @HLVanFleet @lanasloanwrites

Thanks for stopping by and giving us a look! And don't forget to check out all of the other adult mentors listed below.

CHAPTER ONE
Nobody sane should ever be up at eight on a Saturday morning. Especially not when said person stayed up until three a.m. for a horror movie marathon with her best friends Ivy and Nena. So totally worth it though.
What a waste of a Saturday. I could be sleeping, or bungee jumping, or sleeping, or ziplining, or sleeping instead of starting a job I didn’t want in the first place.
I bit back a yawn as I smoothed the wrinkled turquoise polo, the required uniform for Mountain View Resort employees. Taking a deep breath to steady the waves in my stomach, I knocked on the door to room four-oh-two three times, as instructed, and squeezed my clipboard against my chest.
What had my father been thinking bringing this guy to Branson? For the last few years, I’d overheard Dad lamenting to my brother about how the shows didn’t make enough money and the profits from the resort disappeared into the theater. If Dad wanted to revive that dump, he’d need someone to sell out every performance. I had serious doubts about his choice. Another reason I was in the doghouse.
I lifted my fist to hammer the door a second time when it flew open.
A wet torso greeted me, and a hint of the hotel’s jasmine soap drifted from the room. My gaze followed water dripping down tanned pecs and over the only real six-pack I’d ever seen as it disappeared into the thick hotel towel wrapped around his waist. Wow. My face burned hotter than the coffee I’d slammed earlier, and I forced my head up to meet the gaze of The Gracin Ford, celebrity bad boy and former member of Accentuate, a one-hit wonder boy band.
Gracin’s manscaped eyebrows arched as bright blue eyes took a circuit over my body. My skin tingled all over in response to his gaze.
Sadly, he had to open his mouth. “Not my type, but thanks.”
Then he slammed the door in my face.
What? That… that… that son of a bitch! I punched the door three times, fully prepared to give this egotistical asshole a piece of my mind. Meanwhile, my father’s lecture from half an hour ago echoed between my ears: “If you want to go to U of N in the fall, you work for me this summer to pay me back for the damage to the Mercedes. Don’t, and you can go to Southern Community like your brother did.” I counted to thirty, trying and failing to calm myself while I waited for his highness.
The door swung in. At least this time, he’d had the decency to put on a pair of khaki shorts and a t-shirt. His gaze shifted over me once more, and I tried not to squirm, but blue eyes gave me the creeps. And brought back memories I’d rather pretend didn’t exist.
“What now?” he asked. If he was even slightly miffed, he didn’t show it. The cool nonchalance in his voice didn’t stop my temper from shooting toward the atmosphere.
I dug my nails into the back of the clipboard and smiled my best smile. “Hi, Mr. Ford. I’m Carly Reynolds, your … personal assistant. Your father provided us with a detailed itinerary of your day-to-day–”
“Let me see it,” he said, leaning his shoulder against the door jam.
I handed it over, keeping the tremor in my hands at bay. Personal assistant my ass, more like his errand bitch. If he hadn’t fired his previous P.A., I could be lounging by the pool as a lifeguard or cleaning rooms or checking guests at the front desk. Instead, I had to spend my summer following every whim of a twenty-year-old has-been. As he took the itinerary, his eyebrows furrowed at something else. Before my hand could drop back to my side, he snatched it and tugged at the tie holding the leather cuff covering my wrist.
His eyebrows lifted again and amusement danced across his full lips. “Nice tat. Why hide it?”
“Who says I’m hiding it?” He let go of my hand, and I quickly retied the cuff over the small trinity knot tattoo on my wrist. It had only been two weeks since I’d gotten inked, but Mom and Dad hadn’t noticed. Yet.  I crossed my arms and bit the inside of my upper lip. As much as I didn’t want to be here, I also didn’t want to go to Southern Community. Keeping my mouth shut was kind of required if I wanted to go to Nashville in the fall.
Gracin nodded and refocused on the itinerary. He flipped the paper, shaking his head. “According to this, you’re supposed to take me to breakfast every morning at eight so we can discuss the day’s schedule.” He handed the clipboard back to me. “I’m assuming that’s why you’re here now.”
“Yep.”
He sighed. “Let me get my shoes. No doubt the big kahuna will be expecting me.” He moved into the room and I reached out to hold the door open. “I’ll get a more realistic schedule to you.”
“Realistic?” I asked as he slipped on a pair of boat shoes and a Rolex that could pay for half a semester at U of N or the entire two years at Southern Community.
“Yeah, that’s clearly the schedule Dad wants me to keep. Not even close to reality.” Gracin stepped into the hallway, patting his pocket. He groaned and turned to stop the door from shutting completely, but it was too late. He fell forward, letting his forehead thunk against the thick wood. “You wouldn’t happen to have a key to my room, would you?”
“No, but we can get one from the front desk after breakfast. You’re moving into one of the cabins today anyway.” I shrugged because it wasn’t that big of a deal. “No worries.”
Gracin laughed, but there wasn’t any humor to it. “Do me a favor. Keep this key thing between us, okay? The last thing I need is to hear how irresponsible I am. Again.”
I held back the scoff and the sarcastic comment that would normally shoot from my mouth in record speed. Especially since I’d heard the same lecture more times than I could count. “Yeah, okay. But we have to go now, or you’re going to have to hear how irresponsible I am.”
“Well, I won’t say anything about the tat in that case.” Gracin’s smile showed his Hollywood white teeth.
We were half way between his room and the elevator when his cell rang. I tried to ignore his half of the conversation, but when you’re alone with someone, it’s hard not to listen.
“Hey, babe.” Pause. “Yeah, I had a great time too.”
Another pause. Gracin laughed, clutching his hand against his chest.
“Probably best they didn’t catch us. Photographic evidence and all.”
Another pause when we got to the elevator. Gracin’s face turned from California tan to the shade of a bruised red pepper.
“You didn’t? Please tell me you didn’t.”
I wanted to lean closer to hear what the person on the other end had done. Celebrity drama and all. I didn’t seek it out, but that didn’t stop me from reading the headlines when they popped up on my computer.
After I pushed the button for the elevator, we stood side by side. Gracin’s fingers tightened around the phone. I could hear a female voice coming from his speaker but not what she said. Gracin slapped the mirrored doors.
Housekeeping’ll love that.
The doors dinged open as Gracin’s fist soared toward them, and he threw himself into the elevator. He managed not to fall, but it was so hard not to laugh.
“Next time you talk to that jackass, tell him you were just another one-night stand.”
Wow. I’d somehow managed to keep my expression neutral when he fell into the elevator, but my mortification couldn’t be hidden.
He stared at me in the mirror. “There goes hiding my lack of responsibility today,” he said in a calm voice that didn’t match the fury from a moment ago.
I kept my mouth shut despite the thoughts running through my head and held his mirrored gaze. Both took supreme battles of will. I thought only one thing: U of N. Nothing was going to keep me from going to Nashville.
Gracin tilted his head. His eyebrows sagged as he opened his mouth. A beep sounded from his phone, distracting him from whatever he was about to say. He shook his head at the screen and then handed it to me. “Here. Fair warning before Hurricane Albert leashes his wrath on me.”
I wasn’t interested in getting caught up in his drama, but curiosity got the best of me and I glanced at the image on the screen. It wasn’t anything major. A beautiful girl with bright brown eyes and obviously dyed red hair kissed a smiling Gracin on the cheek. It was pretty clear they were in a bar when this was taken. Several empty beer bottles sat on the table in front of them.
“A hot chick took a photo of you guys in a bar?” I handed the phone back. “Big deal.”
“The ‘deal’ is she sold it to a tabloid.” Gracin shoved the phone into his pocket. He didn’t spare me a glimpse, even in the mirror. “I can see the headlines already: ‘Gracin Ford Falls Off the Wagon.’ ” Finally, he faced me. “Except I didn’t. I’ve been sober for almost a year. None of those empties were mine. Not that anybody will believe me. Especially King Albert.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, ‘oh.’”
I didn’t say anything, but the heat burning the tips of my ears was enough.
The elevator opened to the lobby. Gracin motioned me out first and followed me to the private dining room. Dad sat at the head of the table in the middle of the room. My mother sat to his right, and a gray-haired man with a stringy comb-over sat on his left. His extensive lack of hair didn’t stop Albert Ford from trying. My older brother, Luke, sat next to three empty seats for me, Gracin, and my little sister, Miranda. Quite the family affair.
“Carly, I’m glad you made it,” Dad said, adding a fake laugh at the end. To anyone else, it might’ve appeared teasing. I knew better. Dad was not happy we were a minute late. Of course, when it came to me, he wouldn’t have been happy had I been two minutes early either. My father was the consummate politician around here. He ruled more like a dictator, but was JFK when guests were around. “I thought you were going to be late.”
“That’s my fault, Mr. Reynolds,” Gracin said. He threw out a hundred-watt smile.
I fought to roll my eyes. At least he’s taking the hit for me.
“Carly rushed me out the door, then let it close before I remembered to grab my key.”
And under the bus I go. Thanks, asshat.
Dad stared through me with his laser pointer green eyes. “Well, Carly, I suggest you head to the front desk and get another. While you’re there, make sure housekeeping stays out of his room until this evening when the cabin is ready.”
“Yes, sir.” I let my head drop in good girl compliance, catching the laughing eyes of my brother. We both inherited Dad’s light brown hair, but Luke lucked out getting Dad’s eyes. Unfortunately, he used them to taunt me at every turn, which only served to remind me who was the chosen one in the Reynolds family. Hint, his name began with an L.
Gracin made his way toward the buffet spread. He piled fresh fruit on his plate, winking at me. I shuddered as I freed myself from the room. Guys who winked were just plain creepy.
My last summer before heading off to college was going to be the worst one of my life. All because of a little dent in a Mercedes. Smashing.

Hope's Decree:
I couldn't feel anything.
My whole freakish life I'd desperately wanted to shut out the surge of emotions I often felt from others. But this empty vacancy was out of place and wrong.
Off to my right, something flickered. I turned to look, and in the distance, a flash of light caught my attention. I watched, transfixed as it expanded and molded into the solid figure of a man. Curiosity or stupidity–not sure which–drew me toward him. With each step, my insides stirred, a desperate need beckoning me.
I made it close enough to see his coal black hair and broad shoulders before his image blurred and disappeared. Maybe I should have run, or at least tried, but an inexplicable force held me still. Now he stood behind me. I tensed as his massive arms wrapped around my waist.
His hold liberated my mind from the numbing loss of feelings, and fear pressed against me. Within him, profound fragments of greed and hate surged. But it was what those demented feelings led to that frightened me. A siege of war and bloodshed unlike the world has ever known.
Fear and terror spread through me like fire. I began to shake and my stomach rolled with nausea. His unbreakable hold suffocated the light inside of me and the darkness emerged.
Hope's Deceit
Waking up every morning to Blain and his skillfully, mind- blowing kisses definitely made starting the day easier. Those lips
of his had a way of making me forget the outside world. His clean cotton and fresh-out-of-the-shower scent clung to him like static, and I couldn't get enough. The feeling of comfort and safety while wrapped in his arms enveloped me, and the terrible images that startled me awake earlier faded away.
Melia being a Rogue and nearly killing me was frightening. But seeing the black orb attack Blain was a whole new level of terrifying. He seemed okay, though. God, I hoped he was okay.
Blain inched back, definitely far enough to see redness spread across my face, and grinned. His stare, the desire and need held there, made my pulse race. "God, you're beautiful," he said, stroking a thumb across my cheek.
His tender touch burned through me. The familiar buzz danced along my skin, and the colors from our power–white and gold– followed the sweet caress.
"This is my favorite part, the pink across your cheeks and knowing I put it there."
I smiled. "Mine is definitely your lips."
In turn, they kicked up in a sinful smile. The single butterfly in my stomach multiplied into a swarm. The clear blue in his eyes darkened, and he brought his mouth over mine.

On Rachel’s twenty-seventh birthday, she wishes to finally find a rewarding job. What she doesn’t wish is to drink a boatload of wine, sleep with a tattooed bad boy, and drunk email her boss in one glorious, career-ending move. But the fiasco pushes her to pursue a career inspired by her late father’s love of wine: sommelier.
Unfortunately, she’s competing against her infuriating one-night stand, a man as intoxicating as a Pinot Noir.
Two years ago, Jimmy was set to inherit his family winery. Then it got ripped from his grasp. To close that dark chapter of his life, he plans to win a local sommelier contest and use the press to expose his family’s tainted wines.

He also hates to lose.
LEGS is a full-length, standalone Smart, Sexy Romantic Comedy with a swoony Happily Ever After. No cheating or cliff-hangers here! Perfect for fans of Christina Lauren, Avery Flynn, Alice Clayton, Emma Chase, and Lauren Blakely.
Author Heather Van Fleet - “Kelly is a masterful story teller, and this book proves just that. HIGHLY rec it.”
Bookgasms Book Blog - “This was the perfect way to lose a day - wrapped up in this seductive and satisfying love story.”
Author Elizabeth Zane - “You guys, if you want the perfect book to curl up and read with a nice glass of wine, if you want a book that has romance--sexy, steamy, funny, real, romance--then look no further, you've found your book.”
Rachel settled onto the stool beside me, her spine ramrod straight. She tucked her elbows to her sides. Not exactly relaxed.

A drink could help. “What’s your poison?”

“Apparently dangerous men I don’t know, but I’ll have a glass of the Lynmar Pinot.”

I could do dangerous. “If I’m your poison after two minutes, imagine how you’ll feel in a few hours.” That earned me a long swallow from her. “She’ll have the Foursight,” I added to Cameron. It was sweet how confident she was ordering that wine, but her lips would taste so much better after a sip from my glass.

She shot me a look, her freckles sharp against her reddening cheeks. “Pretty sure I can order for myself, and I’d like the Lynmar.”

“You don’t want the Lynmar. 2011 was a brutal year. Trust me.” No need to bore her about the early rains that season and the lack of fruit.

“Actually I do want the Lynmar.”

Cameron moved to grab the bottle, but I held up my hand. He halted.

To her, I said, “I’ve been sipping the Foursight since I got here. You telling me you don’t want a taste?”

Her attention dropped to my lips again, and she grazed her teeth over hers. Fire sparked in her brown eyes. “I may want a taste of that wine. Later. For now I want the Lynmar.”

“It’s inferior.”

“It’s splendid.”

“The season was crap.”

“The season was hard, not crap.”

“The Foursight is a sure thing,” I said. She must have seen the heat in my gaze.

“I like the underdog,” she countered, a sultry note to her voice. “Finding a diamond in the rough. The vines that survived 2011 were stronger, and a few vintages shone. Like the Lynmar. Hints of spice. Creamy mouthfeel.” A quiet hum passed her lips.

Okay. The girl knew her wine, and my attraction to her spiked. With the haunts I’d been frequenting, and my bartending gig at Rudy’s Tavern, I hadn’t been around a woman like her in ages. No visible ink, her outfit more conservative than racy. Her straight brown hair would look sexy as hell tangled in my fist. “You sure you don’t want to skip to the mouthfeel part?”

She smiled freely, the first hint of her letting loose. “I’m still not sure how bitter the aftertaste will be.”

My answering grin was just as carefree. “I know how to make it sweet, Sunshine.”

She barely reacted, but her nostrils flared. “Then get me a glass of the Lynmar.”

“You’ll regret it.”

“I’m already regretting walking in here.”

I chuckled, unsure the last time flirting had been this much fun. “How about a bet?”

“I don’t bet with strangers.”

“But you have drinks with them?”

She paused. “What sort of bet?”

Between her rejection at Vesper and her stiff posture now, sitting beside me was probably pushing her beyond her limits. Limits I wanted to test. The women I’d messed around with weren’t tough to reel in. We were always after the same thing: a fun night between the sheets. The girl at my side was tipsy, but not so drunk she didn’t know what she was after. Something told me if I could unlace her, it would be lightyears beyond fun.

“You do a blind tasting of the Foursight and the Lynmar,” I said. “If you can’t tell them apart, then I buy you a glass of my choosing, and I get to taste it on your lips. At my place.”

“That escalated fast.” So did her breathing.

“Did you want this to go slow?”

Instead of turning me down, she said, “If I win…if I guess each wine, what do I get?”

“You tell me.”

“A winery?”

I barked out a laugh, but there was nothing funny about her joke. Two years ago, I’d have been able to ante up. “Might be out of my budget. Anything else?”

She looked at me through lowered lashes. “My place.”

Now we were getting somewhere.

Soon she and her boyfriend are out to sea on a cruise ship full of reality stars, including her nemesis, Ariana; her lying, cheating ex; and some wicked producers looking to bring the drama. Running into your one-night stand is a special kind of awkward. Competing against him in a wine tasting contest is delicious torment…

The last person I wanted to see walked into the restaurant, and I tensed. Her frantic gaze was forced to me, and the only three vacant seats. She searched the room in vain, the rounding of her spine a clue she wasn’t thrilled about her options. She looked out the way she came, squeezed her eyes, then squared her shoulders and marched toward me. Part of me—the lower half—wanted to pin her to the wall with my thighs while I hitched that proper little skirt higher. The other part hoped she’d wandered into the wrong place. Not because our night together had been bad, or the fact that she’d disappeared without a trace. No. The thing that had the tendons in my neck bunching was remembering how good it all was. Too good and too much fun, and I’d imagined rounds two and three and four ad nauseam. But rounds always ended in a knockout punch. This girl was nothing but trouble. She paused at the table, drew in a long breath, mumbled something as she exhaled, then glared at the seat beside me and the ones across. She chose beside, probably to face the room. The only reason we’d hooked up two weeks ago was because there were no names and no strings. She’d admitted how hard it would be for her to relax, how awkward she’d feel afterward. The relaxing part I took care of with one brush of my lips. The awkward was still alive and kicking. What went down between us couldn’t happen again. Distractions over the next two months weren’t an option, and repeat affairs led to feelings, and feelings led to promises, and promises were nothing but lies dressed up to seduce. Not an outcome I was keen to revisit. Still, I couldn’t ignore her anxiety, as long as she wasn’t here because of me. I leaned toward her. “You’re the last person I expected to see.” She squished her lithe body farther from mine. “Kind of coincidental, don’t you think? Did you follow me?” “I got here before you. If anyone is stalking, it’s you tailing me.” Indignation colored her cheeks. “I didn’t follow you. I saw a flyer and thought the contest looked interesting, but you obviously read it, too. If I’d known you’d be here”—aggravation laced her hushed tone—“I’d never have shown up.” Her harsh words had me fisting my hands, or maybe it was how tempting the line of her neck looked, that column of tanned skin shifting as she swallowed. But she was right: having a diversion wouldn’t help my plan. “Then we’re on the same page.” “Excuse me?” “Since we’re both here for the contest, we can pretend that night never happened.” Her face fell, but a beat later, she said, “Good,” nothing but ice in her voice. I followed with “Great.” She spat, “Fine.” So much for stamping out the awkward.
Kelly is the author of CHASING CRAZY, MY PERFECT MISTAKE, A FINE MESS, and HOOKED ON TROUBLE, the latter three being part of her Over the Top series. A small-town girl at heart, she moved from the city to open a cheese shop with her husband in northern Ontario. When she’s not neck deep in cheese or out hiking, you can find her, notepad in hand, scribbling down one of the many plot bunnies bouncing around in her head. She’s also an incurable romantic, devouring romance novels into the wee hours of the morning.

Cover Reveal: Steadfast by Michelle Hauck

I'm so excited to have Michelle Hauck on my blog today, talking about all things writing and sharing with us her new cover! It's phenomenal. She's an amazing person to know and follow in the publishing world, and I'm truly blessedto be one of those people.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It all starts, of course, with getting hit with the writing bug. You have an idea for a story. You bravely sit down and write it. You learn that you don't know how to write quite yet and you begin to gather experience plucked from other writers farther down the road.

A manuscript or four later your craft has improved enough to land an agent. Your brilliant story goes out to the scary land of editors and may or may not sell. But you persist. You write other stories if the first one fails. And eventually you make your first sale for, say, three books.

Now you are faced with the scary fact that you need to write your first sequel and carry on a story line. You get the wonderful news that the characters you adore will live on. At the same time, you are full of anxiety that a sequel is a daunting thing and you've never tried one before. Bravely you forge forward and write a sequel that meets your editor's approval.

A new first appears now that you conquered the other challenge. You now have to write the ending book of a series. You have to take all the characters and all the obstacles you created and bring them to, not just an end, but a highly exciting end. Once again you doubt your talent and ability. You plunge forward nonetheless. And you succeed.

Cover reveals. Release days. Publishers Marketplace announcements. All those days are great days, but they are blips on the actual journey. The true test is the challenge you meet everyday to go out and do what scares you because you might fail-- and see yourself instead succeed.

So a cover reveal is not so much a celebration of art as it is a celebration of spirit. Another test passed. Another doubt proved groundless. A forging forward on the journey of you, whether you are a writer or something else.

Proof I climb this mountain in the form of a third cover for my Birth of Saints series. Thank you for being a witness and may you climb your mountains.

Do what scares you my friends and face those challenges.

Against an angry god whose only desire is to wipe out all life, what hope is there to survive?

The army from the north has left a trail of burned and captured cities. In trying to stop them, Claire and Ramiro unleashed the northern god, Dal, but now they face two monstrosities and no amount of honor or hope can stop the killing as Dal grows in power.

Searching for a miracle, Claire finds the elders of the Women of the Song, who might teach her a thing or two about using her voice magic to fight back—if they can put aside their own problems first—while Ramiro searches for truth in his dreams, leading him to the northern priestess Santabe, the only one who could share her knowledge of Dal and the mysterious magical Diviners.

Claire must unite the Women of the Song in the face of utter destruction, and Ramiro must decide how far he will go to get the answers he needs to defeat the rampaging god.

It will take nothing less than a saint to rise and face the leviathan before they all become martyrs. (unofficial blurb)

A world of chivalry and witchcraft…and the invaders who would destroy everything.

The North has invaded, bringing a cruel religion and no mercy. The ciudades-estados who have stood in their way have been razed to nothing, and now the horde is before the gates of Colina Hermosa…demanding blood.

On a mission of desperation, a small group escapes the besieged city in search of the one thing that might stem the tide of Northerners: the witches of the southern swamps.

The Women of the Song.

A lyrical tale of honor and magic, Grudging is the opening salvo in the Book of Saints trilogy.

Following Grudging--and with a mix of Terry Goodkind and Bernard Cornwall--religion, witchcraft, and chivalry war in Faithful, the exciting next chapter in Michelle Hauck's Birth of Saints series!

A world of Fear and death…and those trying to save it.

Colina Hermosa has burned to the ground. The Northern invaders continue their assault on the ciudades-estados. Terror has taken hold, and those that should be allies betray each other in hopes of their own survival. As the realities of this devastating and unprovoked war settles in, what can they do to fight back?

On a mission of hope, an unlikely group sets out to find a teacher for Claire, and a new weapon to use against the Northerners and their swelling army.

What they find instead is an old woman.

But she’s not a random crone—she’s Claire’s grandmother. She’s also a Woman of the Song, and her music is both strong and horrible. And while Claire has already seen the power of her own Song, she is scared of her inability to control it, having seen how her magic has brought evil to the world, killing without reason or remorse. To preserve a life of honor and light, Ramiro and Claire will need to convince the old woman to teach them a way so that the power of the Song can be used for good. Otherwise, they’ll just be destroyers themselves, no better than the Northerners and their false god, Dal. With the annihilation their enemy has planned, though, they may not have a choice.

A tale of fear and tragedy, hope and redemption, Faithful is the harrowing second entry in the Birth of Saints trilogy.

2017 PitchWars Wishlist for Heather Van Fleet and Jessica Calla

I am so pumped to be mentoring for a second year in PitchWars, and even MORE excited because this time around I’ll be co-mentoring with the amazingly talented, Jessica Calla!

Neither Jess nor I were ever picked for PitchWars as mentees, so it’s extra fabulous that we’re in this thing together now, both as agented and published authors. With that being said, the two of us will be mentoring Adult and New Adult.

#TEAMAWESOME For the win.

(This is our official team name, By the way)

About Heather:

Hey, I'm Heather!

I'm a stay-at-home mom of three crazy girls, that are basically little nut cases, (Ha, kidding. Sort of...) and two pups, one big, one tiny, both of which have officially turned me into a crazy dog lady.

I’m married to my high school sweetheart, Chris, and this year we'll be celebrating 15 years of marital bliss. I live in northwestern Illinois, less than a mile from the Mississippi river.

I’m represented by Stacey Donaghy of Donaghy Literary, and my adult contemporary romance series, Reckless Hearts (A Three Men and a Baby retelling, Alpha Marines style) is published through Sourcebooks Casablanca. Book one (Reckless Hearts) is available in bookstores now, while book two, (The Right Kind of Reckless) releases in November.

I love, Love, LOVE to read romance. At the age of twelve, I would sneak into the romance section of the library and finger through the metal shelving units for all things Harlequin books featuring men wearing suits with babies in their arms on the covers. Now, I'm lucky enough to stay at home and write those types of romance books as a career.

My favorite book series as of right now are The Hangmen Hades Series by Tillie Cole and The Dartmoor MC series by Lauran Gilley. (I’m HUGE fan of Motorcycle Club romances, HINT-HINT) My favorite standalone novel will likely always be Beautiful Disaster by Jamie Mcguire (because HELLO, Travis, anyone?) and, as of recently, A Boy Like You by Ginger Scott. Yes, this is upper YA, but the swoons in it are EPIC. (It’s also kind of/sort of a superhero romance. HINT-HINT again.)

I also adore watching romance movies. Dirty Dancing (the eighties version, not that horrific remake) is my favorite. I’m also a sucker for The Notebook, non HEA and everything.

About Jess:

Hi, I’m Jess.

During the day, I’m a lawyer in New Jersey. At night, I write Adult and New Adult contemporary romance. My first book, The Love Square, was published by Limitless Publishing in January of 2016. My New Adult series, the Sheridan Hall series, is published by BookFish Books and consists of She Laughs in Pink, She Runs Away, and She Wants it All. Heather content edited all three books, so I know from first-hand experience that she’s an awesome mentor. I’m represented by Inklings Literary Agency.

I love romance, any steam level, open door or closed door. My favorite new adult book of all time is Easy, by Tammara Webber. I love anything and everything by Nora Roberts and I’ve never not cried at the end of a Nick Sparks book. I love to cry. It’s weird. I know.

I have a million favorite movies, but Overboard comes to mind now. So wrong, but so right. I can also recite every line of Grease (and maybe even Grease 2, don’t judge), and if you mention the word “Titanic,” my eyes start to tear up in an automatic response. I’ve also been singing the Beauty and the Beast songs pretty much nonstop since seeing the movie a few weeks ago.

Heather’s Experience:

- I worked as a content/developmental editor for a little over a year at BookFish Books and fell head over heels with my job. (This is actually where I met Jess! I was her editor as mentioned above.) It was an incredibly rewarding job, and I met some of the most amazing people and authors during my time there. But things happened personally for me last year, and I had to move on.

- Currently, I work as an agent assistant/foreign rights manager at Inklings Literary. It's the best job ever, and my ultimate goal is to, someday, become an agent. There is something crazy amazing about helping other authors out with their dreams, which is one of the draws to PitchWars for me. I was never a mentee, even had my heart broken over it twice after not getting picked, but things happen for a reason, I'm a firm believer in that, and I am completely okay with the outcome. :)

Jess’ Experience:

- I’ve been mentoring new authors for about a year now, as a beta reader and as a mentor in Twitter contests. People say my comments are constructive and helpful!

- I coordinate the New Jersey Romance Writers Put Your Heart in a Book Contest for unpublished writers. I’m active in NJRW, as well as in the Women’s Fiction Writers Association. I’ve had a lot of exposure to unpublished manuscripts, as well as to agents, editors, and successful authors.

- As an intern, I’ve read submissions for a small publisher, recommending whether to sign authors. I have experience with good and bad queries and pages, and know how to gain an agent or editor’s attention.

- I’m a lawyer and have been writing in that capacity for almost twenty years.

- I’m the mother of two special needs boys: Patience and encouragement are my specialties! Let me help you motivate and improve!

What to expect if we pick you as our mentee:

- As your mentors, we will most definitely work with you on the big picture as far as your manuscript goes. This includes fixing plot holes, beefing up characters and their development throughout your manuscript, cutting the dreaded telling versus showing, pacing, and all the stuff that goes along with content/developmental edits. We will be your best friends, standing by you long after the contest is over, BUT we will also be the two people who push you the hardest.

- If we think your book needs an overhaul, we’re going to need a mentee who is not afraid to tackle that. You only get two months to make this baby shine, you must be willing to work hard and fast. If you're not willing to possibly kill your darlings, change your love interest, remove a point of view, or change an entire book from first person to third, or vise versa, then you might not want us as your mentors. We’re not saying this is something that HAS to happen, of course, but we will most definitely suggest it if need be. In the end, though, this is YOUR baby. We're only here to make it pretty, and guide you along the way with our knowledge.

- We will give you a lovely gushing editorial note with all our big thoughts and plans, then we will each go through your book (twice) doing both content/developmental edits and line edits.

- It will be hard.

What we want to see in ADULT and NEW ADULT submissions:

This is the part we’re most excited about. (And what you're probably most interested in knowing too, we're guessing.)

So without further ado, our wish list:

The bottom line is? We love all things romance and kissing. Unfortunately, we can't read manuscripts without it. Therefore any subs we receive MUST have romance of some sort in them.

Now, I'm sure some of you say: "Oh, but Heather and Jess, you two are missing out on so much by only wanting books with romance." No doubt we are. You're right. BUT, the truth of the matter is, we WRITE romance, we READ romance, it's only appropriate that we MENTOR books with romance, don't you think?

With that being said, we’re totally not picky about subgenre. (YAY!) Just as long as there is kissing. Some sexy stuff would be fan-tabulous too. Sex isn't necessary, BUT it will make us happy campers.

Some specifics that we'd love to see are below.

Contemporary Romance:

- Give us ALL the tropes in both NA and A.

1. Best friend's older brother

2. Brother's best friend

3. Friends to lovers

4. Next door neighbor

5. Enemies to lovers

6. Childhood friends to adult lovers

7.  Single dads or moms

8. Secret Babies

- Roommates turned lovers. (Heather's 2016 mentee had a roomate book and OMG. So much love for the roomie trope)

- GIVE US YOUR MOTORCYCLE CLUB ROMANCES. Please and thank you. (AKA GIVE US YOUR JAX!!!!)

- We'll take superhero stories with elements of romance too. (A Wonder Woman retelling, perhaps?)

- We’re also HUGE suckers for sports romances. Think Sawyer Bennett's Cold Fury series or Elle Kennedy's The Deal. Not just hockey, of course. Send us your FOOTBALL players, BASEBALL players, SOCCER players, RUGBY players, ULTIMATE FIGHTERS, etc. Grabby hands for all the NA or ADULT sports romance.

- We love alphas, especially the dirty talking kind.

- If your hero is broody, grumpy, but has a heart of gold for his woman, then that is the book for us.

giphy (6).gif

- Bring on the sweet/beta boys too, the kind that make us swoon and want to curl into ourselves with giddy smiles and happy hearts. You know the kind, right? The ones that turn us into to absolute mush.

- We want rockers and we want country boys.

- We LOVE tattooed and non-tattooed bad boys. And boys with beards and scruff? YES. Bring it on.

- We love a HEA most of the time, BUT if you have a woman’s fiction with VERY STRONG romantic elements in it, and the ending holds a sobby Nicholas Spark's book vibe, then we’ll read that baby. (Even if we hate you in the end for it.)  Basically, we're a sucker for angst, heartbreak, and books that make us ugly cry. In other words, we love to be torn into pieces. WRECK US!

- Bring on the diverse women, especially! The ones who are not typically size six's. The type of women who don't feel as though they have to change to find the right man in their lives. All shapes, sizes, walks of life. BRING IT. We love our ladies as much (if not more) than our men.

- We want your dark romances. The kind that make us question our sanity for loving them. Dark thrillers, dark romantic suspense, dark romance in general.

- Your forbidden romances? GIVE US THOSE. ASAP.

- Give us your retellings! Beauty and the Beast, Robin Hood, the likes of any retelling, as long as there is romance between those pages somewhere.

- We’ll read and swoon and get all sorts of giddy over BDSM and erotica romance too, but the characters HAVE to fall in love in the end.

- Give us your diverse love stories. PLEEEEEASE. (Think anything Megan Erickson.)

- And finally, if you make us laugh with your words, we will love you forever.

Fantasy with VERY strong romantic elements

- We love fantasy. Think, A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet. It’s swoony with a kick butt heroine and one sexy hero. We loved it.

- We'd totally be down for a unique time travel romance. Vikings/Outlanders all that good stuff, just as long as it doesn't completely take place in history. We're not huge history buffs. (Though there is a first time for everything.)

Paranormal Romance & Urban fantasy romance

- Who says these are dead? Not Jess and I. GIVE us your shifters, especially. Your alpha or beta wolf, bear, tiger, etc. Think Patricia Brigg's Mercy Thompson series or Molly Harpers Naked Werewolf series.

♥ Sci-Fi with VERY strong romantic elements ♥

- Sexy alien guys are HOT. Seriously. Think an Adult or NA-aged Daemon Black from Jennifer Armentrout's Obsidian.

- Anything that has a Laurann Dohner or Eve Langlais. (Sexy Cyborgs, alien mates? Yes, please)

- You got a romance that takes place in space or on a spaceship or on another planet? Sure, we’ll give it a try, just as long as it’s romance based in the end.

♥ Apocalyptic/Post-apocalyptic/Futuristic/Dystopian with VERY strong romantic elements ♥

*WARNING*

The two of us have an unhealthy obsession with The Walking Dead. So beware, future mentee. You MUST be ready to deal with our TWD fan-girling.

Don't worry though. If you hate this show, or have never watched it, or cared to watch it, we'll still love you. xoxo

#PerfectDirtyDaryl

Here's the thing about this genre... we believe there is a place out there for every book, as long as it's well written with a good voice and an equally intriguing and unique plot.

So, if you have an Adult or NA dystopian, post-apocalyptic, or apocalyptic story that is romance centric then send it to us. We adore these types of stories. Like, an adult or NA version of The Arcana Chronicles by Kresley Cole, perhaps, or a very sexy TWD like story that blows us away.

Things we DON'T want to see in our submissions:

- No vampires, please. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them, other than the fact that we’ve read too many and got majorly burned out.

- We're not into Regency Romances, sadly.

- If we have to wait until the very end of your book for the kissing to happen, it might not be our thing.

 *FINAL NOTE*

If you send us something that has no romance in it at all, then we likely won't even read it. So PLEASE do yourself a favor and don't send us something non-romance related because you think it will change our minds. We'd hate for you to miss out on an opportunity to be picked by a mentor that does want to read books with no romance.

So, there you have it, our wants for a dream mentee's book, all wrapped up into one long post.

In the end, like agents, us mentors look for voice first and for most. Something we can connect to. Something that makes us want to weep with joy and hug and kiss (and from what I remember) even lick the pages of your manuscript. When it's all said and done, we will pick the manuscript we fall in love with and can feel ourselves helping the most. In fact, it may have nothing to do with the things we mentioned above.

If you want to chat more with us, or have questions, or just want to find out how awesome we are (HA) then follow us on Twitter.  @HLVanFleet  @Jess_Calla

Cover Reveal: Loving Kalvin (The Kennedy Boys #4)

Loving KalvinLoving Kalvin (The Kennedy Boys #4)
By Siobhan Davis
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age category: upper Young Adult/ New Adult
Release Date: July 2017

Blurb:
A second-chance romance from USA Today bestseller Siobhan Davis. Standalone with HEA and no cliffhanger.

Lana
I knew it would end in disaster, but I didn’t listen to reason. I didn’t care. Because I loved him so much.

Kalvin Kennedy ruled my heart.

Until he destroyed it.

Shattered it so completely that I became someone else. Someone I loathed. Someone who repeatedly lied to her loved ones.

So, I ran.

From him. From myself. Desperate to hide my new reality.

But I could only run so far.

When he reappears in my life, I’m terrified. Unbelievably scared of facing the consequences of my actions.

Never mind that I still love him and want him so badly—there’s too much at stake now.

How can I trust him with the biggest secret of all when he’s likely to rip my world apart again?

Kalvin
Lana was always far too good for me. Everyone knew it but her.

I tried to stay away, but I was weak.

And I hurt her.

Crushed her until she barely resembled herself. Forced her to follow a path she would never have willingly chosen.

And then she was gone.

And my world has never felt as empty, as lonely.

She begged me to stay away. Not to find her. To forget she ever existed.

But that’s like asking me to slice my heart in two and toss half aside.

I’ve never believed in fate, but when I rock up to the University of Florida, I’m ready to eat my words.

Because she’s here. Like I hoped she would be. And I’m determined to prove I deserve a second chance.

When ratings for her popular DIY show start to circle the drain after the sudden death of her sister, Charlotte “Charlie” Conti has only one mission—to plan a comeback. But her sister had other plans. As part of the will, Charlie must work with *him*  to create a memorial scholarship in her sister’s memory. The same *him*  Charlie fell in love with three years ago while working at a summer camp.

The same *him* she dumped to protect his heart.

Sexy British player, Nate Walsh, has sixty days to find a new job or he’ll be deported back to England where he’s no longer welcome. He doesn’t have time to work on a memorial scholarship with *her*. The same *her*  who shattered his heart without explanation or warning.

The same *her*  he’s never gotten over.

Unable to agree on a benefactor for the scholarship, Nate and Charlie challenge each other to a winner-takes-all competition. They both know the only way to win is to turn up the heat and tease one another with the one thing they both want: each other. But as sparks fly, their true feelings resurface. Nate and Charlie must decide if their love is worth the effort or if they'll allow their disastrous past mistakes to destroy their chance at forever.

Bio

KD Proctor loved college so much that when it came time to graduate, she didn’t want to leave.  Trading in her textbooks for student handbooks and policy manuals, she began a career in College Student Personnel and she fulfilled her wish to stay on a college campus forever.  She always joked that one day she’d write a book about college students, never expecting that to come true!

KD lives in West Central, Minnesota with her husband and fur-kids.  She likes to write fun twists on the usual tropes that we all love. Her characters are smart, funny, and always swoony.  And yes. They always get their happily ever after.

Before being accepted for publication, MEET ME UNDER THE STARS (formerly titled IF YOU'RE EVER IN TOWN) was the 2016 YARWA winner for the New Adult category.

When Faye needs him and he isn’t there for her, guilt and hurt threaten to obliterate their love. As they start to rebuild their fractured hearts, another sordid family secret is uncovered, and Faye worries Ky may be lost to her forever.

New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett has written her most gripping and poignant tale yet. Provocatively heart-breaking, audaciously irreverent and romantically fulfilling, The Hard Truth About Sunshine exposes just how very thin the line is between a full life and an empty existence. Despite having narrowly escaped death's clutches, Christopher Barlow is grateful for nothing. His capacity to love has been crushed. He hates everyone and everything, completely unable to see past the gray stain of misery that coats his perception of the world. It's only after he involuntarily joins a band of depressed misfits who are struggling to overcome their own problems, does Christopher start to re-evaluate his lot in life. What could they possibly learn from one another? How could they possibly help each other to heal? And the question that Christopher asks himself over and over again... can he learn to love again? He's about to find out as he embarks upon a cross country trip with a beautiful woman who is going blind, a boy with terminal cancer, and an abuse victim who can't decide whether she wants to live or die. Four people with nothing in common but their destination. They will encounter adventure, thrills, loss and love. And within their travels they will learn the greatest lesson of all.
